For many on Key Biscayne, the 2020 and 2022 local elections were troubling. Norms were broken, with candidates and supporters escalating from friendly waves at Crandon and Harbor to hurling false accusations via megaphone. Sober candidate mailers turned into scandalous hit pieces. On WhatsApp, some candidates suggested unincorporating our village, disbanding police and fire departments, and slashing village staff and programs. Well-intentioned initiatives like infrastructure funding and zoning updates were mischaracterized as corrupt schemes.
